Held as part of Art Basel, the world's premier contemporary art show, Dubai Next displays fine art, photography and documentary films that together tell the cultural story of Dubai.
Organised by the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority in cooperation with the Vitra Design Museum in Basel, the exhibition is curated by renowned Dutch artchitect Rem Koolhaas and Jack Persekian, Artistic Director of the Sharjah Biennial.
The exhibition displays the work of UAE national artists like Reem al Ghaith and Lamya Gargash as well as filmmakers like Ebtisam Abdulaziz, Nawaf Al Janahi and Waleed Al Shehhi. International artists whose works are part of the show include Jala Abuthina, Tarek Al Ghoussein, Mohammed Kazem, Charlie Koolhaas, Reineke Otten and Todd Reisz His Excellency Dr. Omar bin Sulaiman said: "Dubai Next is the first example of the DCAA's efforts to position Dubai as a key player in the international art scene. Visitors cannot fail to be impressed by Koolhaas' and Persekian's masterful planning of this exhibit, which showcases the talents of both UAE National and visiting artists. We see the ripple effect ripple effect Epidemiology See Signal event. from this exhibition drawing increasing international attention to Dubai as a destination not just for business and tourism, but also for culture and art." He added: "Most importantly, this is a time for our national artists to showcase the organic development of fine arts in Dubai. Through this exhibition we hope to ensure that our young artists associate with world renowned artists and share their own heritage, perspective and creativity."
Alongside the works of a group of Dubai-based artists, the curators have placed a concept installation by established Dutch artists Charlotte Koolhaas and Reineke Otten that offers the recorded perspective of the foreign artist passing by Dubai for a short period. Resident artists were selected by Persekian and Bidoun Editor Antonia Carver, who has curated a short film segment that showcases the vibrancy of the short filmmaking scene in the UAE. The segment explores ways of representing current realities.
Michael Schindhelm, Cultural Director of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority commented: "Over the next few years we are looking to develop meaningful partnerships with exhibitions and venues such as Art Basel and the Vitra Design Museum to foster collaborations with global art communities. We will ourselves establish state-of-the-art venues in Dubai to provide a platform for showcasing and promoting the best local, regional and international art. Due to our strategic location and our role as a bridge between East and West, we believe Dubai will be a strategic hub for art and its development."
